The Latest

On July 17th, the Superior Township Board of Trustees voted to approve the rezoning of the 76-acre property located at 3900 N. Dixboro Road for Garrett's Space's use as a new healing space for young adults struggling with depression and anxiety.

We’re so grateful to all of you who showed up for Township meetings to voice support for Garrett’s Space and our rezoning application. The Township Board of Trustees was clearly moved by the mental health experts, our brethren non-profit organizations and the incredibly moving personal stories from people who have been touched by suicide loss and mental health challenges.

We will now move forward with our planned acquisition of this exquisite site and take the next steps to provide the in-person programming our participants need and crave at the existing house on the property. Concurrently, we will further our planning and designs of our residential center, creativity studio and outdoor spaces. We hope to commence construction in the summer of next year.

Again, thanks to all of you for your incredible support. Throughout this multi-month process, which was often challenging, we were buoyed by the way so many of you rallied around us. We couldn’t have done it without you!

Background

We are excited to report that we have a private 76-acre property in Superior Township under contract where we plan to build our non-medical residential space for this population. During three to four week stays, guests will be surrounded by a warm community of caring staff, including social workers and facilitators, and will engage in mood-lifting activities in a natural setting that promotes connections and healing.

We recently submitted our rezoning plans to the Township for approval. While the larger community is positive and encouraging, the neighbors who live closest to the property oppose our efforts to build the residence, incorrectly claiming the young adults Garrett's Space serves present a danger to the community, that the center will depress property values and that the use is not consistent with current zoning and the Township Master Plan. We believe their description of the young adults we serve perpetuates stigma that could discourage seeking help and the future creation of these types of critically needed support options. We also believe that our residential use fits well with the current zoning and Master Plan.
