Our Mission

Garrett’s Space is dedicated to reducing suicides and filling critical gaps in supportive care options for young adults ages 18 to 28 facing mental health challenges. We are working to restore hope and perspective in this population by promoting connections, self worth and resilience.

Our Vision for the Residential Center

Our goal for the center is that it be a supportive space with a non-medical feel, a haven from the outside world where young adults feel safe and supported. We believe this type of place could have helped Garrett, and we are convinced that it will help many young adults who are having difficulty navigating this increasingly complicated and hard world.

Who we will serve

Our target population is young adults ages 18-28 struggling with depression and/or anxiety who can benefit from being in a safe, supportive and healing environment and see that they’re not alone in their struggles.

How we will support residents

Our guests will engage in mood-lifting holistic activities, and we will work to promote connections and help them feel better about themselves and their lives. We currently anticipate our guests will stay overnight at the Center for three to four weeks and that there will be concurrent outpatient programming. Services and activities will include: group support, including support from peers who have experienced similar struggles; coping strategies for broken relationships; support for families; and an extensive array of holistic options focused on teaching healthy behaviors and promoting wellness, such as meditation, yoga, art, music, poetry workshops, journaling and healthy cooking. Our guests will be embraced by a warm community of caring staff, including including nurses and social workers.

Features of our physical space

Our building will be immersed in nature with walking paths, greenery, gardens and tranquil wooded areas. We are actively searching for land in Washtenaw County, Michigan that is private and shielded from noises and other distractions.  We are planning to create an inspirational and uplifting structure in a space that is nurturing and promotes opportunities to connect. Our programs and spaces will actively connect our guests to nature and create opportunities to engage with the natural environment.

Our indoor spaces will include a great room with significant community space, a large kitchen and dining room, several separate activity areas for movement, group therapy, music, art, exercise and meditation, a quiet room for solitude and reflection, small clinical rooms, and an administrative suite. Areas outside of the main structure could include spaces such as an amphitheater, fire pit, basketball and/or volleyball courts, gardens, an art center, and an outbuilding for animals.

Young adults will be actively engaged in the design process and that process will include robust attention to biophilic and trauma-informed design principles that can foster resilience, connections and hope.

Help Us Build Our First Residential Center.

We’re eager to build a groundbreaking residential center after researching premiere residential mental health facilities across the United States. With the help of our experts, including faculty from the University of Michigan, we’re aiming to make this a model that can be replicated nationwide. Our dream is to see a Garrett’s Space East and a Garrett’s Space West – ultimately reaching and helping a huge swath of young adults across the country. This is an ambitious undertaking and we need your help. We are grateful for every donation. No amount is too small. Join us in our effort to create a desperately needed place for struggling young adults to heal and find hope.
