Hello!

Putt for a Purpose
Mini Golf Fundraiser Supporting Young Adult Mental Health
Mark your calendars for Sunday, November 16th from 2–8 PM—we're partnering with Putt-R-Round in Ypsilanti for a mini golf fundraiser that brings together fun, community, and mental health support.
Putt-R-Round is a charming indoor mini golf and putt arcade in downtown Ypsilanti, featuring handcrafted holes and creative arcade-style putting games. With an 18-hole course that changes periodically, it's the perfect spot for a fun afternoon or evening out.
Mini golf is just $9 per person, and on November 16th, when you mention "Garrett's Space" at checkout, 25% of all gameplay and merchandise purchases will directly support our work to provide hope, healing, and connection for young adults facing mental health challenges.
Thank you to the Eastern Michigan University social work students who are partnering with us to plan, promote, and host the event—doing meaningful outreach and sharing mental health resources throughout our community. Their involvement reflects the kind of peer-to-peer support and community connection that's central to our mission.
RSVP or learn more here! We hope to see you there!

Exploring Mind-Body Connection Through Yoga-Inspired Movement
Earlier this month, our wellness group participants gathered for a yoga-inspired movement workshop co-led by Marly, Garrett’s Space’s Program Development Specialist and certified Iyengar Yoga Instructor, and Erin, a Clinician and Wellness Group Facilitator.
Drawing on how trees shed their leaves to survive winter, the session centered on cycles, letting go, and the natural process of release that makes room for renewal. Erin brought leaves and gel pens, inviting participants to write down what they wanted to release—emotions, worries, or things that no longer served them.
Through mindful movement, the group explored how physical expression can help us process emotions held in the body, with active sequences awakening energy and quieter restorative postures offering space for stillness and grounding. At the end, participants carried their leaves outside, ripped them up, and released them as an act of renewal.
We're grateful to Yoga Focus Collective for hosting us in their bright, warm studio—the perfect location for this experience! Monthly movement workshops like this are a core component of our wellness programming, which provides young adults with practical skills and peer connection as they navigate their mental health journeys.

Did You Know? Talking About Suicide Doesn't Increase Risk
Research shows that asking someone about suicidal thoughts does not increase their risk of suicide—in fact, it may reduce suicidal ideation and improve mental health outcomes. A comprehensive review found that openly acknowledging and discussing suicide can be protective rather than harmful, meaning checking in with someone you're worried about is not only safe—but potentially life-saving.
This evidence dispels the common myth that talking about suicide "plants the idea" in someone's mind. Instead, it opens the door for connection, support, and professional help when needed.
You don’t have to have all the right words to support mental health—just be someone who cares enough to start the conversation. Showing up and being present for someone can be more powerful than the exact words you choose. Each time we listen without judgment and reach out with empathy, we help break down stigma and create a culture where mental health conversations are accepted and encouraged.
