November 2025 Newsletter
As the gathering season begins, we have a few special things for you this month. First, Dave Garcia, our Executive Director, wanted to take a moment to speak directly to you —the community that makes Garrett's Space possible.
In this brief video, he shares reflections on what your support has meant for the young adults we serve and the work ahead.
Navigating the Holiday Season
The holidays can be a joyful time, but they can also bring pressure, expectations, and loneliness—especially for young adults navigating mental health challenges. Many people feel overwhelmed by family dynamics, disrupted routines, or the pressure to “be okay.”
If this season feels heavy, you’re not alone, and there is nothing wrong with needing extra support or space to breathe. A few grounded strategies can help:
1️⃣ Set boundaries early—you don’t need to attend every event or engage in conversations that drain you.
2️⃣ Keep one steady routine such as sleep, movement, or a daily check-in with someone you trust.
3️⃣ Plan for overwhelm by giving yourself permission to step outside or take breaks in high-pressure settings.
4️⃣ Stay connected in small, manageable ways, even if it’s just a brief message to someone you trust.
5️⃣ Lower the pressure to feel festive—your emotions don’t have to match the season.
Give yourself grace this season—your well-being matters more than any expectation.

Update: Community-Engaged Writing with Garrett’s Space
The Lloyd Scholars for Writing and the Arts Community-Engaged Writing seminar at the University of Michigan, taught by Scott Beal, is partnering with Garrett’s Space this semester to explore how writing, reflection, and advocacy can address the mental health challenges young adults face.
So far, the students have participated in a Q&A with our co-founders Scott and Julie Halpert, audited our website, reflected on their own experiences with mental health, and created public outreach campaigns focused on awareness and wellness. They are now focused on developing sample fundraising campaigns, and our Director of Development, Marissa Alaniz, visited the class earlier this week to provide insight and answer questions.
We appreciate the depth and thoughtfulness these students bring to this partnership as they continue learning about mental health and community advocacy!
